How to Self-Publish Your Book
in 1 Month or Less: Easily, Professionally, & Successfully

by Kristen Clark

Are you a first time author who’s having difficulty getting your book accepted by a traditional publisher?

Are you frustrated with the traditional publishing method, including writing endless query letters and toiling over detailed book proposals, hoping for at least one bite from a publisher?

Or have you had the good fortune of being published by a “real” publishing house, only to discover that the it was going to take 18 months-2 years for them to publish your book, and even after that, you were expected to do (and pay for) all of the marketing and advertising needed to get people to actually buy your book?

Do you want more control over the publishing process?

Well, I have great news for you; publishing your own book may be your solution, and I’m here to help!

Several years ago, my husband was looking for a publisher for his collection of short stories and poetry. As a university English professor, he had already published several works in anthologies, read his work at many academic conferences, and taught thousands of students how to write fiction, poetry, and plays in creative writing courses throughout his 3 decade career.

To his dismay, though, he discovered that the small presses that typically publish short story and poetry collections only print a few hundred copies, and the pay was usually a few copies of the journal or book and an extra line on his resume. He also discovered that these publishing houses usually didn’t have any budget at all for advertising or marketing the books, so he was forced to solicit book reviews and create his own book tours, hoping that he’d sell a few copies each time he did a reading at a local bookstore or college.  He spent quite a bit of money taking out small advertisements in journals and conference programs, printing and mailing posters to bookstores, etc., but rarely made that money back in book sales, especially given that since the publisher owned the rights, his royalty as the author was only a dollar or two per book.

And the same is true for most fiction, self-help, religious, or how-to books, whether they are published by small presses or large, established publishing houses. The publisher controls the process (which can often take 18 months to 2 years), the publisher decides on the book cover design and might even delete whole chapters of your content, the publisher owns the rights so makes most of the profits, but YOU, as the author, are expected to invest your time, effort, and money to promote and market and hopefully sell the book.

That’s right–in today’s publishing world, even those authors “lucky” enough to get their books picked up by larger publishers are expected to do most or all of the marketing for their own books. Sure, they might get listed in a catalog or on a website, and maybe have their book included among dozens of others at a conference or book show, but that’s about it.  And the same pitiful royalty (typically about 15%) applies.

That’s why my husband and I created our own publishing company, American Mutt Press. And in not much longer than it would have taken just one book to be published by a large publishing house, we’ve published over fifteen books (yes, 15 BOOKS!) for ourselves and others, and have a dozen more in the works for this year alone.

Now you may not be interested in publishing in such high volume or at such a rapid pace, but imagine if you could publish at least one book, or perhaps even two or three, in the next couple of years. Imagine (assuming that you’ve already completed a good draft of your manuscript) publishing your book within the NEXT 30 DAYS.

Imagine how good that would feel?

Imagine how proud your friends and family will be?

Imagine how many people could benefit from, put into practice, or as in the case of poetry or fiction, simply enjoy the contents of your book?

And . . . imagine how great it would feel to see those royalty commission checks start coming in like clockwork, month after month after month. Feels pretty darned great, eh?

That’s why I’m so excited to tell you about my newest online course:

In this course I will guide you with easy to follow, step-by-step instructions for publishing your own beautiful, high-quality book. Imagine, one month from today you could be holding your own book in your hand!

Now before we talk about the details of the course, you’re probably wondering, “Who is this Kristen Clark?” and “Why is she qualified to teach me this process?”

Well, let’s go back just a few short years. Although my main job was in the computer industry, I had spent several years mentoring women in my church and in a recovery program that I was involved in.  I had learned a lot about myself through spiritual study and personal development courses that improved my self-confidence, and often found myself typing up handouts and short articles for the women I was helping.  After doing several public speaking presentations based on my material, people started asking if they could buy my book, but I could only answer, “I don’t have a book.” Writing an entire book and trying to go through the entire traditional publishing process seemed like a daunting, insurmountable task, so I didn’t even bother to try. Eventually I did gather my material into a small booklet that I made copies of and put together with a plastic spiral binder.

But it wasn’t a “real” book, and I had no hope of having it carried in bookstores or sold online through Amazon or Barnes and Noble.

When I married my husband, we moved into a new house together and he found my booklet in a box. He was impressed with the content, and as an English professor, helped me with the writing style, flow, grammar, and all that stuff. “You really need to get this published,” he said.  “There are a lot of women who are hurting and lack confidence, and this book could help them become happier, more fulfilled, and more confident.”

“Yes,” I told him, “I wish I could get it published, but the process is so long and hard that I’ve given up.”

He told me about his previous experiences in the publishing world, and explained why he had made the decision to self-publish his last two books. “Forget about those big publishers,” he said.  “Let’s get your book published and start helping women NOW, rather than waiting for “maybe” and “someday.”

And that’s exactly what I did. My Becoming a Woman of Worth book has won several awards, and has birthed an entire “Women of Worth” series in which dozens of women have contributed to my compilation books, based on the Chicken Soup for the Soul publishing model.  In addition, I’ve written and published several books about such diverse topics as poetry, bird watching, short story writing, and women’s self-esteem and confidence, and have helped others publish books on self-help topics, spirituality, career change, and women’s health.  Here are just a few of the books we’ve written or helped to edit, format, and publish in the last couple of years:

Yes, there was a steep learning curve. Yes, I sometimes got so frustrated that I wanted to give up.  But after doing the process over and over once, twice, three times, and now over a dozen times, I’ve learned the essential steps and also developed some short cuts that have helped my personal coaching clients to publish their books quickly and easily.

But don’t take my word for it; here are a couple of comments from some clients I’ve helped navigate through the publishing process:

“Your enthusiasm for this project was infectious.  I too did the happy dance… and already have several friends who want to buy the book, so I ordered more than what I initially planned… It was a great first writing experience for me.  Thanks again for all your work on this project.”

Karen Nolen, Author

“You were right, my heart did a flip flop, when I read the first line in your email, ‘Is now available!’ Its almost like this is a dream, but someone’s else dream.  I said to myself, ‘you have written something that is in a BOOK, yes a real BOOK, with pages, and bound with a picture on the front!’  I cannot thank you enough.”

Laurie Smith, Author

“I am ELATED!!  You strengthened the document with your subtle changes; when I read it with a fresh mind, I am very happy and it turned out the way I had initially conceptualized it. You have raised my confidence immensely.”

With thankfulness and appreciation,
Ute Godkuhle, Author

These are just a few comments from the many authors I’ve had the privilege of working with to help them realize their dream of finally getting their book published. Here’s a couple more:

“I had the opportunity to hire Kristen Clark to edit and format my last book and I’m glad I did.  She made the process extremely easy in all regards.  She outlined her timeline in terms of what to expect her output to be, which I really appreciated.  She then did a “test edit sample” to show me how she would edit my book and where she would add value if I agreed.  Very impressive.  I felt she made the editing a collaboration so we could both be happy and satisfied with the result.  She scores an “A+” for going the extra mile.  I would recommend her to edit your book with full confidence you will like the outcome.  I will gladly return for her services on my future books.”

Dorothy Tannahill-Moran, Author

“WOW! Thank you so much. Your kindness keeps surprising me, and I’m not sure why… other than it’s a rarity in this form these days. Thanks for being “different” and courageous. I love how you’ve had this vision, and have pressed through. It’s an honor to serve with you.”

Marcy Pusey, Author

And although I’ve enjoyed helping many people publish their books through one-on-one coaching and consulting, I realize there are many authors who can’t afford to pay for individual coaching. That’s why I’ve developed my brand new course, “How to Self-Publish Your Book in One Month or Less.”

That’s right—you don’t have to go through the years of trial and error, the frustration of learning this or that software program that may or may not be helpful for editing and formatting the text, creating graphics, designing the book cover, converting the content to electronic book formats such as Kindle, etc.

I have condensed my hundreds of hours of trial and error into five simple, easy to follow video tutorials that you can follow along with to quickly and easily publish your own book without all the heartache and wasted money, time, and effort.
